UTH:: weekend find!

UTH, you probably read that and went what is she talking about?  I LOVE Thrift Stores, Garage Sales and Craigslist.  Let’s face it I love a deal, you might as well call me “Second Hand Rose” yes, I love Barbra Streisand too but that’s another story. I have in the last years named these adventures Urban Treasure Hunts aka UTH.  We used to only do them in Big Red the Explorer but since we got Gertie, Mama’s new Passat wagon – she was a UTH too, we take her also.

Mr. Miller and I were driving through Mission this weekend after a visit to Diaper Daisy and we came upon a yard sale and he had these wonderful wash tubs on a stand.  That definitely caught my eye but alas he wouldn’t budge on the price so I moved on.  I walked the yard through all of his lovely treasures, since all were 50% at that point.   I came upon this gem tucked away and filled with other treasures.  I looked at the tag and it said $5 so that meant $2.50 call it SOLD!  I paid the man and it got loaded in Gertie on top of Cameron’s golf clubs that I forgot were still back there and away we went.

 

When I got to the car Mr. Miller gave me “the look”, you know the one where they are saying “now what is she going to have me do”.  I re-assured him this was an easy project.  I just simply wanted to use it for the garden hose in the back yard.  It already had a rusted hole in the bottom so I thought we could bring the hose up through the bottom and coil them in.  He agreed.  Sometimes this Mama is pretty clever.  I love the challenge of repurposing old into new.

Mr. Miller did a great job with placement.  He set it up on some pavers so the hose didn’t get kinked and put it out by the kitchen so I could get the garden easily and the rest of Green Acres.  Nice job Honey!

 

Warning the cute Puppy in the next picture is not for sale or trade.  Introducing our newest member of the Green Acres Family, Penelope Karolynn aka Penny.  She is a 20 week old German Bulldog who loves to pose for pictures.  We are working on commands, she thinks she gets a treat whenever she sits Pretty for us.  What you haven’t heard of a German Bulldog?  She is a Pedigree German Shepard and English Bulldog.  We love her to bits.  I will share her story soon.

parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme…

 

My little herb garden is finally done. We have Parsley, Cilantro, Rosemary, Oregano, Sweet Basil, Sage and Lavender.   I have yet to have a truly successful year with an herb garden.  I am trying smaller pots and a partially shaded area since they call for sun and partial shade.

I found the cute marker idea on etsy and Pinterest.  I made a few changes.  I went to the DAV on an Urban Treasure Hunt and picked up 10 random soup spoons for $.29 each and used a sharpie.  I made cute and reusable garden markers for under $3.  Plus I up cycled.  A win win in this house.  I might head back down there to make markers for the rest of the garden too.  As for the herbs we used Rosemary the other night in the chicken and it was amazing.

Urban Treasure Hunt

One of our favorite adventures is to go Thrifting or I refer to them as my "Urban Treasure Hunts". Last night we had some amazing finds. Yes, it was Friday night and most people go to dinner or a movie but I prefer loading the Urban Farm Truck and hitting a few of my favorite haunts. One of which is the DAV on Wornall in Waldo. Fabulous finds, great staff and good prices.

This obsession of mine started years ago in Topeka. Mimi and I went to a Flea Market and I fell in love with these vintage canning jars. Aren't they beautiful? I still stop in my tracks if I come across any.



Here are a few of my treasures:

Look at these Knitting Needles! I am wanting to learn to knit, but it is costly to get started. I found all of these and the 2Nd Chance Thrift Shop, which supports the City Union Mission, for $2.50. Hello, can you blame me for snagging these beauties. OH the fun I am going to have! My friend Debby at www.leftyloopy.blogspot.com has graciously offered to teach me. I am so excited, I have also checked some books out at the library!

Wool sweaters, always on my list for the diaper covers. These were great finds at .99 cents a piece. I should be able to get 2-4 covers depending on the sizes I make from these.

Another sickness, is my fondness of Pampered Chef. I sold it for years so I know you are thinking what more could I possibly need in my collection. Mr. Miller found this down on a bottom shelf for under $8. The Large Stoneware Bar Pan! I love the one I already have and I had said recently I would love another but was not willing to pay full price. Thank you Lord for hearing one of my selfish prayers.

And last but not least is my newest addiction. Vintage Pyrex, yes the stuff we all thought we had to get rid of from our Grandmother's Auction, 1st apartments and the list goes on. I ask what was I thinking? I love these little numbers. I am always on the look out for these! I am not sure which is my favorite pattern yet, this one is from the Early American Collection. It will make a great little serving piece. So Deacon you ask about things to look for at the Auction in Valdosta any of these numbers would be great! Hint, Hint!
